It is a study of the dynamics of the translation process, with particular reference to the roles played by the actual speakers of the Yoruba, Igbo and Isekiri languages, as the Bible was being translated into their mother tongue. We have tried to understand the process of deciding why a translation was needed in these languages, who should do the translations and the relationships between the mother-tongue translators and the European missionaries with whom they worked. The Introduction contains a survey of the history of, some general considerations about Bible translation and early academic studies of West African languages. There are three main parts in the thesis, containing a total of eight chapters dealing with Yoruba, Igbo and Isekiri respectively. The first chapter of each part gives a historical, sociological and linguistic background of the particular people and subsequent chapters thereafter discuss the translation of the Bible into their language. The discussion of the Yoruba translations is confined to one chapter while the Igbo translations cover three chapters and the Isekiri work, like Yoruba , is confined to a single chapter.

These are the earliest known sculptures on the continent, next to those of Ancient Egypt. Later around AD, the Igbo-Ukwo was making finely and intricately worked, bronze ceremonial objects. Against this background of creativity and craftsmanship, the Yoruba kingdoms of Benin and Ife sprang up between the 11th and 12th centuries. Oduduwa became the first ruler, or Ooni, of Ife.
We know little of how these early Ooni exercised power or how their territory was administered, or precisely when the kingship started. We know that the landscape out of which Ife and Benin emerged consisted of a mixture of tropical forests and savannah land, affording very fertile soil and a high rainfall. This released labour, which could then be channelled into creating great works of art centred largely on celebrating kingship.

Student thesis : Doctoral Thesis. Contextualising form, content and creative practice in Igbo dance theatre. Christian Nwaru. Abstract The discourse that surrounds Igbo dance theatre has not received substantial critical scrutiny. This study seeks to investigate the absence of exposition and post climatic stages in Igbo dance theatre. It argues that the absence of these stages or ‘missing links’ has resulted in the sequestration of structure and plot of contemporary Igbo dances thus making it difficult for audience members especially the non-indigene or foreigners to fully understand and appreciate the performances.
The investigations of selective archetypal dances from Igboland form the basis of this study. Field interviews and observations conducted in Eastern Nigeria helped generate information on dance narratives, patterns, designs, and overall aesthetic strategies and enabled me to trace the cultural activities and background of the Igbo people from which the above named dances have evolved.

Igbo is a national language of Nigeria and is also recognised in Equatorial Guinea. Igbo is made up of many different dialects which aren’t mutually intelligible to other Igbo speakers at times. A standard for Igbo called ‘Igbo izugbe’ has been developed. Igbo is written in the Latin alphabet introduced by British colonialists and missionaries. Secret societies such as the Ekpe use nsibidi ideograms to write Igbo and other languages around its area of influence.
Through the transatlantic slave trade , the Igbo language has influenced many creole languages in the Americas , especially in the former British Caribbean , including islands such as Jamaica , Barbados , Dominica , and Trinidad and Tobago. Igbo is spoken by a significant number of people on Bioko island in Equatorial Guinea, formerly known as Fernando Po, and in micro-communities in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, and it is also spoken by recent migrants of Igbo descent all over the world. Igbo is a tonal language with a high, mid, and low range, in addition there are rising and falling tones.
There are further accents that indicate nasal or backed vowels. Vowels in Igbo are very similar to those in English when there is little tone stress on them. Most of the times vowels in Igbo are written with accents indicating this tone. Consonants do not have a tone in Igbo apart from ‘n’ and ‘m’ which are the only letters that can be written with accent marks.

It specifically highlights the links between family, culture, institutions and entrepreneurial behaviour in this context. Understanding the vagaries of ethnic entrepreneurship can arguably only be achieved through research that is undertaken within these socio-historically rich, traditional and cultural contexts. Drawing upon social learning theory, the study finds that Igbo families provide an entrepreneurial leadership platform which influences youths through role models, providing mastery experiences and socialisation.
The extended family provides a safe environment for risk taking, creativity and innovation. Also, an informal apprenticeship system provides entrepreneurial learning that prepares the younger generation to take to business as a way of life. The study is, however, based on a relatively small sample size of 50 respondents, which makes it difficult to generalise its findings on the investigated population of Igbos comprising individuals who may, or may not, behave entrepreneurially.
